Houston, Texas – Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) is expanding is lineup of DaVinci processors with four new chips. These chips—the TMS320DM6437, TMS320DM6435, TMS320DM6433 and TMS320DM6431—are known collectively as the DM643x family. These chips run at speeds of up to 600 MHz and are priced as low as $9.95 in 10Ku quantities. They target automotive vision markets including lane departure and collision avoidance; video security; and video telephony.
The DM643x processors are the first DaVinci devices that contain only a digital signal processor (DSP) core. Previous DaVinci devices paired the DSP core with and ARM core. Thus, the new DM643x processors are architecturally similar to TI's TMS320DM640/1/2/3 digital media processors. However, the DM643x uses the TMS320C64x+ core, which is 20% faster than the core used in the TMS320DM640/1/2/3. The DM643x chips also include hardware that accelerates functions such as video encoding, scaling and color space conversion. The details of this hardware vary from chip to chip. Chips that include the encoding accelerators are said to be capable of H.264 video encode at D1 resolution.
The DM643x processors each provide 80 Kbytes of L1 data cache, 32 KBytes of L1 program cache/SRAM and 128 Kbytes of L2 cache/SRAM. They include a 32-bit DDR2 SDRAM memory controller and an asynchronous 8-bit wide external memory interface. Other peripherals include a 10/100 Ethernet media access controller (MAC), two UARTs, I²C and SPI, GPIO, McASP and three PWMs.
The TMS320DM6437, TMS320DM6435, and TMS320DM6431 (but not the TMS320DM6433) also offer features that make them particularly suitable for automotive video applications. Specifically, these chips support the CAN interface, and they have achieved AEC-Q100 qualification for automotive applications.
The TMS320DM6431, which runs at 300 MHz, is priced at $9.95 to in 10,000 units. The other three chips, which all run at 600 MHz, are priced from $16.35 to $22.95 in 10,000 units. Samples of all four devices are available today, and volume production is expected to start in 2Q 2007. A digital video development platform will be released in 2Q 2007.
